The FBI in Peace and War was a radio crime drama inspired by Frederick Lewsis Collins' book, The FBI in Peace and War. The idea for the show came from Louis Pelletier who wrote many of the scripts. Among the show's other writers were Jack Finke, Ed Adamson and Collins. Airing on CBS from November 25, 1944 to September 28, 1958, it had a variety of sponsors (including Lava Soap, Wildroot Cream Oil, Lucky Strike, Nescafe and Wrigley's) over the years. Martin Blaine and Donald Briggs headed the cast.

The Adventures of Maisie (aka Maisie) was a radio comedy series starring Ann Sothern as Brooklyn secretary Maisie Ravier, a spin-off of Sothern's successful 1939-1947 Maisie movie series. Sponsored by Eversharp, the first series ran on CBS from July 5, 1945 to March 28, 1947, airing on Thursdays at 8:30pm during the first two months, then moving to Wednesdays at 9:30pm (1945-46), then Fridays at 10:30pm (1946-47). The supporting cast included Hy Averback, Arthur Q. Bryan, Hans Conried, Virginia Gregg, Peter Leeds, Johnny McGovern and Sidney Miller. John Easton was the announcer, Harry Zimmerman and Albert Sack supplied the music, and John L. Greene was the producer. Tony Sanford directed scripts by Samuel Taylor and others. In 1952 the series was heard on Mutual from January 11 to December 26, and it was syndicated from 1949 to 1952 with Pat McGeehan as Eddie Jordan. Bea Benaderet and Elvira Allman portrayed Mrs. Kennedy. The supporting cast included Averback, Conreid, Leeds, McGovern, Lurene Tuttle, Ben Wright, Sandra Gould and Jeffrey Silver. Harry Zimmerman led the orchestra with John Easton and Jack McCoy announcing. The show popularized the 1940s catch phrase, "Likewise, I'm sure."

“As the early-morning bugle-call of covered wagon trains fades away among the echoes, another true Death Valley days story is presented for your entertainment by the Pacific Coast Borax Company, producers of that famous family of products – 20 Mule Team Borax, 20 Mule Team Borax Soap Chips and Boraxo.” One of the most respected shows of early radio, Death Valley Days was well written and endured throughout the decades. Ruth Cornwall Woodman was asked to write the show in 1930. Though she knew nothing of the desert and its people, New York Vassar graduate Ruth undertook the project with enthusiasm. When the show began in 1930, many of the areas she was writing about were still quite rough in nature, with many roads but mostly mere trails. Each year Ruth would spend several months traveling through the desert to explore ghost towns, saloons, backpacking just outside Death Valley, and interviewing old timers. She would talk to gas station men, bartenders, and small town newspapermen. She did her research well, pouring over old newspapers and visiting old west museums, scouring the west for anything that would inspire a good story. The result of all this hard work was rewarding - a highly successful show that lasted over two decades, and later became a television show with Ronald Regan as the host. Death Valley Days presents stories of the old west, with realism and drama virtually unmatched by other westerns of the day.

Fibber McGee and Molly premiered in 1935. The program struggled in the ratings until 1940, when it became a national sensation. Within three years, it was the top-rated program in America. Few radio shows were more beloved than Fibber McGee and Molly, and few play as well a half century later. The program’s lovable characters included Mayor LaTrivia, Doc Gamble, Mrs. Uppington, Wallace Wimple, Alice Darling, Gildersleeve, Beulah, Myrt, and the Old Timer.

Theater Five was ABC's attempt to revive radio drama during the early 1960s. The series name was derived from its time slot, 5:00 PM. Running Monday through Friday, it was an anthology of short stories, each about 20 minutes long. News programs and commercials filled out the full 30 minutes. There was a good bit of science fiction and some of the plots seem to have been taken from the daily newspaper. Hopalong Cassidy in Dead Man's Hand

Hopalong Cassidy is a cowboy-hero, created in 1904 by Clarence E. Mulford and appearing in a series of popular stories and novels. In print, the character appears as a rude, rough-talking 'galoot'. Beginning in 1935, the character, played by William Boyd, was transformed into the clean-cut hero of a series of 66 immensely popular films, only a few of which were based on Mulford's works. Mulford actually rewrote his earlier stories to fit the movie conception, and these led in turn to a comic book series modeled after the films. As portrayed on the screen, the white-haired Bill "Hopalong" Cassidy was usually clad strikingly in black. He was reserved and well spoken, with a fine sense of fair play. He was often called upon to intercede when dishonest characters were taking advantage of honest citizens. "Hoppy" usually traveled through the west with two companions: one young and trouble-prone with a weakness for damsels in distress, the other comically awkward and outspoken. Barry Craig Confidential Investigator in Remo Torch No Ending

Originally aired October 31, 1951 Barry Craig, Confidential Investigator is one of the few detective radio series that had separate versions of it broadcast from both coasts. Even the spelling changed over the years. It was first "Barry Crane" and then "Barrie Craig". NBC produced it in New York from 1951 to 1954 and then moved it to Hollywood where it aired from 1954 to 1955. It attracted only occasional sponsors so it was usually a sustainer. William Gargan, who also played the better known television (and radio) detective Martin Kane, was the voice of New York eye BARRY CRAIG while Ralph Bell portrayed his associate, Lt. Travis Rogers. Craig's office was on Madison Avenue and his adventures were fairly standard PI fare. He worked alone, solved cases efficiently, and feared no man. As the promos went, he was "your man when you can't go to the cops. Confidentiality a speciality." Like Sam Spade, Craig narrated his stories, in addition to being the leading character in this 30 minute show. Nearly sixty episodes are in trading circulation today William Gargan as a Detective (and an actor) If William Gargan brought an air of authenticity to his roles as a private detective, there were some good very reasons. His father was a bookmaker, so Gargan learned a lot about the gambling world and met a lot of interesting characters from across the spectrum of society. The main reason why Gargan was so convincing as a detective was that he was probably the only actor of his time who had actually been a private detective. He first worked as a credit investigator and collection agent for a clothing firm. Once Gargan was shot at when he attempted to get a deadbeat customer to pay his overdue account. Next, he worked for about a year as a private detective with a New York agency for "$10.00 a day and expenses." Gargan did many of the usual detective jobs: guarding payrolls, tailing possible suspects, conducting stakeouts, and protecting clients with valuables. He was fired when he lost track of a diamond salesman he was supposed to be protecting. As an actor, William Gargan had played Ellery Queen in three movies, before being cast as Kane. After he left Martin Kane, Gargan landed on his feet. He signed a million dollar, seven year contract with MCA for the radio show Barry Craig, Confidential Investigator on NBC. The final spelling used for his character's first name, Barrie, was the same as that of Gargan's oldest son. Gargan eventually got throat cancer, had a laryngectomy and campaigned vigourously (and rather ironically) against smoking for The American Cancer Society for the last twenty years of his life).

The Martin and Lewis Show was the first time that the world had a real taste of the comedic dynamic duo, composed of the venerable Dean Martin and the wacky Jerry Lewis. When Dean and Jerry met, Dean had been trying to make it big as a crooner for over ten years. Jerry, coming from vaudeville parents, naturally wanted to be a performer since he was a wee one. When they were both in their 20s, the boys were introduced by friends in New York City and began performing together. Each helped smooth out the others rough edges. Dino helped Jerry relax on stage, and Jerry helped bring out Dino’s comedic side. The duo performed at nightclubs for several years. They were working their way through the big clubs when NBC announced a talent hunt. They were looking for rising young performers for television and radio. Some of the Network executives caught a nightclub act of Martin and Lewis. They were instantly won over by their chemistry. They tried them on television, but radio was a more popular venue, so they moved them on over and made plans for The Martin & Lewis Show.

These half-hours of drama and sometimes comedy were often very exciting and suspenseful. The cast was very good New York veterans of radio and stage, including Jan Minor and John Larkin as featured performers. The director, Harry W. Junkin, also served as the show's host and narrator. Each week the show introduced a new story, often written by well-known writers of fantasy and suspense such as Ray Bradbury, Cornell Woolrich, Agatha Christie and Paul Gallico. They were dramatized with a full orchestral soundtrack and excellent sound effects.

Dragnet was a long-running radio and television police procedural drama about the cases of a dedicated Los Angeles police detective, Sergeant Joe Friday, and his partners. The show takes its name from an actual police term, a "dragnet", meaning a system of coordinated measures for apprehending criminals or suspects. Dragnet debuted inauspiciously. The first several months were bumpy, as Webb and company worked out the program’s format and eventually became comfortable with their characters (Friday was originally portrayed as more brash and forceful than his later usually relaxed demeanor). Gradually, Friday’s deadpan, fast-talking persona emerged, described by John Dunning as "a cop's cop, tough but not hard, conservative but caring." (Dunning, 210) Friday’s first partner was Sgt. Ben Romero, portrayed by Barton Yarborough, a longtime radio actor. When Dragnet hit its stride, it became one of radio’s top-rated shows. While most radio shows used one or two sound effects experts, Dragnet needed five; a script clocking in at just under 30 minutes could require up to 300 separate effects. Accuracy was underlined: The exact number of footsteps from one room to another at Los Angeles police headquarters were imitated, and when a telephone rang at Friday’s desk, the listener heard the same ring as the telephones in Los Angeles police headquarters.

Best remembered for her sensuous recordings, Shore was one of the most popular recording stars of the forties. While at Vanderbilt University, Shore sang on Nashville radio and took the name Dinah after using ‘Dinah’ as her signature tune. In 1937 she traveled to New York and sang on radio before joining Xavier Cugat as guest vocalist. She made her recording debut with Cugat (‘The Breeze and I’ 1940) but her big break came later that year when she became a regular on Eddie Cantor’s radio show. Her first hit was ‘Yes My Darling Daughter’ (1940),which was an adaptation of a traditional Russian melody. The song that established Shore was Harold Arlen’s and Johnny Mercer’s film theme, ‘Blues In the Night’. That led to her appearing in several movies, including ‘Up in Arms,’ in which she sang Arlen’s ‘Now I Know’ and ‘I’ll Walk Alone’ and the Jerome Kern biopic ‘Till the Clouds Roll By,’ in which she sang the oft-recorded ‘Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.’

British Old Time Radio presents Dr. Gideon Fell, "Below Suspicion" Doctor Gideon Fell is a fictional detective created by John Dickson Carr. He is the protagonist of 23 novels from 1933 through 1967 as well as a few short stories. Carr was an American who lived most of his adult life in England; Dr. Fell is an Englishman who lives in the London suburbs. He is described as a huge, moustached, corpulent man who wears a cape and a shovel hat and walks with the aid of two canes. He is frequently described as bringing the spirit of Father Christmas or Old King Cole into a room. In his early appearances he was called a lexicographer but this description gradually disappeared and he was thereafter mostly referred to as working on a monumental history of the beer-drinking habits of the English people. He is, of course, an amateur sleuth, frequently called upon by the police, who then frustrates them in the usual manner of most fictional detectives by refusing to reveal his deductions until he has arrived at a complete solution to the problem. Most of his exploits concern the unraveling of locked room mysterys or of "impossible crimes." Doctor Fell is supposedly based upon a real person -- G.K. Chesterton, who, like Carr, was a master of detective fiction (the Father Brown stories), and whose physical appearance and personality were apparently similar to those of Doctor Fell.

In Chapter Three of Republic's Radar Men From the Moon, scientist Commando Cody (George Wallace) and his friends Joan Gilbert (Aline Towne) and Ted Richards (William Bakewell) are advised by government official Henderson (Don Walters) that the mysterious explosions that have been crippling America's defense systems may be caused by atomic rays emanating from the moon. Taking action, Cody manages to prevent another disaster by using his flying rocket ship, thus angering Krog (Peter Brocco), an earthly emissary of the lunar dictator Retik. Deciding to look into matters more thoroughly, Cody, Ted and Joan travel to the moon by space ship and Cody gains access to the ruler's palatial headquarters. A defiant Retik (Roy Barcroft) takes time out from plotting an invasion of Planet Earth to explain how the moon's atmosphere is rapidly dwindling. When Cody remains unmoved by this serious piece of news, Retik shoots him at point blank range with an atomic ray gun.
