British Radio 2 Goon Show in The History of Communications

<img src="http://oldtimeradionostalgia.podOmatic.com/mymedia/thumb/22990/0x0_643703.png" alt="itunes pic" /><br />Goon Show- "The History of Communications", 1/29/54
There were three main BBC Radio stations broadcasting in Britain in the 1950s. The most widely listened-to service, the "Light Programme", brought us popular music as well as mainstream light entertainment in the form of variety shows, comedy, and drama. The "Home Service", general entertainment programmes, was the main channel for news, features, and drama. The "Third Programme" meanwhile was unashamedly highbrow in character , its output consisted of classical music concerts and recitals, talks on matters scientific, philosphical, and cultural, together with poetry readings and classic or experimental plays. Each week we will present programs from the best of British Radio Shows from 1940's to the early 1960's.

For baby boomer's that liked The Outer Limits and The Twilight Zone and for all you Trekkies, X Minus One is the forefather of the science fiction you grew up with. <itunes:summary>This weeks episode of X Minus One , "And The Moon Be Still And Bright", 4/22/55
X Minus One is widely considered among the finest science fiction dramas ever produced for radio. The first 15 episodes were new versions of Dimension X episodes, but the remainder were adaptations of newly published science fiction stories by leading writers in the field, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Philip K. Dick, Robert A. Heinlein, Frederik Pohl and Theodore Sturgeon, along with a few original scripts. For baby boomer's that liked The Outer Limits and The Twilight Zone and for all you Trekkies, X Minus One is the forefather of the science fiction you grew up with. You will find that it still is some of the best Science Fiction ever aired. Regardless of you age join us as we explore science fiction with the imagination of our minds and great story telling.Beatles Fans check out Pop Go The Beatles a 45 CD Anthology of the Beatles

Lux Radio Theater, one of the genuine classic radio anthology series (NBC Blue Network (1934-1935); CBS (1935-1955), adapted first Broadway stage works, and then (especially) films to hour-long live radio presentations. It quickly became the most popular dramatic anthology series on radio, running more than twenty years. The program always began with an announcer proclaiming, "Ladies and gentlemen, Lux presents Hollywood!" Cecil B. DeMille was the host of the series each Monday evening from June 1, 1936, until January 22, 1945.

During Mutual Radio broadcast of "The Adventures of Superman", starting in 1945 Superman and Batman, years before their comic book collaborations, really became a functioning team. But largely the team-up of Batman, and Superman provided some time off for an overworked Bud Collyer (Superman). These episodes called for Superman to be occupied elsewhere, and the crime fighting would be handled by Batman. Stacy Harris played Batman in this first team-up with the Man of Steel, and Ronald Liss was Robin. Batman and Robin returned several times over the years, usually with Matt Crowley as Batman and Ronald Liss always played Robin. Now,listen to Batman on the Radio and Movie Serials from the 1940's

The "Third Programme" meanwhile was unashamedly highbrow in character , its output consisted of classical music concerts and recitals, talks on matters scientific, philosophical, and cultural, together with poetry readings and classic or experimental plays. Each week we will present programs from the best of British Radio Shows from 1940's to the early 1960's.

The Adventures of Superman, adapted from the DC Comics character created in 1938 (see Superman), came to radio as a syndicated show on New York City's WOR on February 12, 1940. On Mutual, it was broadcast from August 31, 1942, to January 28, 1949, as a 15-minute serial, running three or, usually, five times a week. From January 31 to June 17, 1949 it ran as a thrice-weekly half-hour show.
